When encountering large scale network, it is often possible to see it to be designed into different virtual LAN (VLAN) such as by department and by geographical area. It brings in a number of advantages such as enhanced security, better throughput and performance of the network. 

However, when it comes to management, it is recommended to create a management VLAN to monitor, system log and SNMP all other VLANs. The management VLAN is a relatively small network within the main network which aims to improve security such as avoiding unauthorised user to alter network configuration or to monitor the network traffic. Management VLAN should only be accessed via specific interfaces or device with reserved MAC addresses. 

Also, it helps minimising broadcast storm on other VLANs since a separate path to the network is available via the management VLAN network. Moreover, this guarantees there is sufficient bandwidth for management purpose when the user traffic is high.
